In a previous incarnation,
Wilsonville Community Sharing began as the “Good Neighbor
Fund.” Local residents paid dues and met monthly over
coffee and cake to design and promote small fund-raising projects
to help those in need in the community.
The City of Wilsonville
eventually created the position of Information & Referral
Specialist as part of its local human resources efforts. In
1997, however, the funding was discontinued and representatives
from local businesses, churches and schools gathered to brainstorm
ideas for creating a similar position through a non-profit entity.
Wilsonville Community Sharing
was born and eventually found its home in offices at the United
Meridian Church of Christ (Frog Pond Church) on Boeckman Road.
In 1999, the organization
also became home to the local branch of the Oregon Food Bank.
Wilsonville Community Sharing today employs two part time specialists
and manages a budget of about $81,000. The City of Wilsonville,
various grants, donations from businesses and individuals, and
fund-raising are sources of income.
Although the client base and demand for services
continue to grow, WCS maintains its commitment to its historical
roots: we remain as neighbors helping neighbors.
